Context and stereotyping: Decreasing the activation of stereotypes
by a training in analytical information processing

Abstract
This article explores the issue of possible ways to decrease stereotype activation effects by manipulating the antecedent task context. It was expected that the specific processing mode evoked and trained before the stereotype measure can modify the accessibility of stereotypical associations. More precisely, it was predicted that the procedure of identification of neutral words will promote a analytical processing mode, which in turn will be able to weaken the strength of associations between a stereotypical category and the relevant traits. The training of a word classification procedure should at the same time enhance the tendency to activate stereotypical associations. The results corroborate the first prediction and also give insight into the dynamics of stereotype activation.

Key words: stereotype activation, information processing mode, task context
